S.A. catering company expanding into Phoenix
San Antonio Express News
October 11, 2006

The RK Group is making its first foray outside of Texas, heading west to the Phoenix area to expand its operations. The 60-year-old locally based catering company, which has the Convention Center contract, recently purchased the assets of Continental Catering in Glendale outside of Phoenix. The RK Group is now the exclusive caterer of the Glendale Civic Center. The company also recently received the catering contract for the Tempe Center for the Arts, a theater complex that opens in April 2007.

"It certainly seems to be a booming area," RK President Greg Kowalski said of Phoenix. "It's very much like San Antonio with its activity and construction. These opportunities came up and we felt like the time is right."

In addition to its San Antonio business, the company also has catering operations in Austin. Next month, Kowalski said, the company plans to launch Rosemary Delivers in Phoenix, which specializes in fast meals to businesses locally and in Austin.

The RK Group is the flagship company to several subsidiaries that specialize in the planning and coordination of conventions, special and corporate events, themed receptions, tours and transportation.

Henry and Rosemary Kowalski started the company in 1946 and catered events for HemisFair '68. RK subsidiary Catering by Rosemary won the Convention Center contract in 1972 and has held on to it ever since.

RK Group wins golf course concession contract with City of San Antonio
San Antonio Express News
September 1, 2006

San Antonio City Council approved a five-year golf course concessions contract with the RK Group, which also hold the concessions contract for the convention Center. Under the agreement, the group will operate food and beverage concessions at each of the city’s six golf courses and one driving range, Parks Director Malcolm Matthews said. In return, the group will give the city 10 percent of its gross sales, of which half will go to the golf fund and the other half to a capital improvement and equipment account.

For the first three months of the contract, which begins Saturday, the city will put payments into the equipment fund for improvements to the facilities, Matthews added.

RK Group will provide food and beverage service for new Medical Center Hotel
San Antonio Express News
April 14, 2006

Executives in the Medical Center soon won't have to travel very far to host meetings: A 168-room La Quinta Inn and Suites will openin their backyard next March. On Interstate 10 between Callaghan Road and Medical Drive, it will be the first limited-service hotel in the area with a 10,000-square-foot conference center. "I felt the opportunity was here to not only serve the needs in that area, but also to provide (less expensive) hotel rooms," said developer and La Quinta franchisee Henry Feldman. "And when the leisure market is at a lull we can still put in meeting business in that hotel, and no one else has that opportunity." Construction has begun on the eight-story hotel, which will also include 28 suites, a fitness center and a breakfast room overlooking a swimming-pool courtyard. Feldman said nightly room rates will range from $89 to $150.

Feldman is well-known in the local tourism industry, with a long career in the luxury hotel market, including managing the Watermark and La Mansion del Rio. This is the first project of newly formed Martin Feldman Hospitality Management Co., headed by Feldman. The company plan is to manage properties for other owners as well as future Feldman developments.

He has partnered with Greg Kowalski of the RK Group, which will manage the conference center. The RK Group over the past 50 years has established a reputation as a full-service caterer.

The La Quinta brand in San Antonio is not known for its meeting space. Its 350-room Convention Center hotel was the first local property with a large meeting space. Feldman said La Quinta executives were flexible and realized this hotel needed to be different -- from its meeting space to its contemporary interior.
