Through the Looking Glass!
Thursday, June 8, 2006 9:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
Don’t be late, don’t be late for this very important date! Whether big or small, you are sure to enjoy this delightful tour through the looking glass, of sorts!
We will begin with a walk through time in a magical land, which is considered by many to be the most beautiful neighborhood in all of Texas, the King “of Hearts” William Historic District. Guests are sure to enjoy the ornate architecture, formal gardens adorned with spectacular art and sculptures, beautifully restored homes and of course the delectable stories of the folks who inhabit them!
Next we follow the white rabbit into the glass studio of Garcia Glass Blowers. Gini Garcia is the owner and artist in residence who will take us through a glass blowing demonstration from molten glass. We will then a visit her gallery, which highlights Gini’s work which is both contemporary and cutting edge. Gini has traveled and trained throughout Europe, including four years in Venice, training and learning with various artists to enhance her natural talent for this amazing craft. She will prove to be a true “Queen of Hearts."
Hickory dickery dock, the mouse ran up the clock – and straight to the Mad Hatters Tea Party! Lunch will be enjoyed at Mad Hatters Tea Room, also located in the art rich area known as Southtown. Or – for a more elegant choice, guests can be treated to the Private Dining Club – Club Giraud.
Next we travel to the Gallery Vetro, Creative Art Glass, where owner, Phillip Schrank will take us through their spectacular shop showcases filled with everything from museum quality pieces, glass bead jewelry to the latest in laser sculptures.
The last discovery is the magnificent McNay Art Museum, an unbelievable collection of works by Picasso, Chagal, Renoir and Monet. But perhaps the most unusual pieces are those created by the mistress of the house, Marion Koogler McNay. Not only a great collector of art, Ms. McNay, was a talented and well-studied artist. She created a tiled mural displayed in the elegant courtyard on the estate which tells the story of Don Quito. The museum is a treasure trove for both the serious and casual art lover. On display is one of the world’s most wide-ranging yet exquisite collections - modern, impressionist, medieval and Native American paintings, sculpture and objects d’art.
Even Tweedledee and Tweedledum wouldn’t miss this adventure!
